Mucositis is a type of disease that affects patients undergoing treatments to combat cancer. The condition occurs when gastrointestinal tract cells, known as epithelial cells, get affected, leaving them vulnerable to infection and ulceration. Due to this, an oral cavity formed as a side effect of cancer treatment, particularly chemotherapy and radiation therapy. It causes several health issues in the body on a cellular level, damaging the health thereafter. Issues such as nutritional issues and problems in the mucosal tract due to the infection spread through it, resulting in a weak immune system.
Mucositis generally develops after chemotherapy treatment owing to the lower count of white blood cells in the patient's body, and radiation results in inflammatory and necrotic action on the oral mucosa, further damaging it. Oral mucositis is diagnosed with the help of the location, appearance, and complete duration of the oral lesions, including the patient's recent medical status and history, which can be helpful in explaining the cause of the condition. Such an approach towards this disease provides proper guidance for treatment and therapy related to the disease.
