According to data from Drugs.com, etomidate emerges as one of the most effective anesthetics. Meanwhile, propofol remains the most popular, with a rating of 7.6. Users were asked how effective they found the medicine, considering positive/adverse effects and ease of use, with one representing ‘not effective’ and ten denoting the most effective.
The major factors propelling the growth of the general anesthesia drug market are the increasing number of surgeries and new anesthesia drug approvals by medical authorities worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, global surgical volume is rising due to the growing incidence of chronic diseases and aging populations worldwide. The American Cancer Society reports that nearly 2,001,140 new cancer cases are projected in 2024 in the U.S., showcasing an increasing demand for surgical interventions and anesthesia drugs.
There is also a major spike in the demand for cosmetic procedures, which is driving growth in the sector. Shifting beauty standards and growing disposable income, especially in emerging economies of the Asia Pacific, is making plastic surgery more accessible than ever. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2020, 2.3 million cosmetic surgical procedures, 13.2 million cosmetic minimally invasive procedures, and 6.8 million reconstructive procedures were performed in the United States 2020.
These rising numbers of surgeries result in the increasing demand for anesthesia drugs. The development and approval of novel local anesthesia drugs are proving to be a new revenue-generating resource for market players.
