As the graph shows, China is the topmost exporter of antimony, followed by Thailand, Oman, Peru, and India. According to the US Geological Survey, China accounted for around 48% of the world’s antimony production in 2023. They also stated that China predominantly owns the recycling of lead-acid batteries, which currently account for around 18% of estimates of domestic apparent consumption of antimony. However, China's dominance over the world antimony market is leading to a shrinking market globally, potentially leading to shortfalls, particularly for critical industries such as defense and electronics.
Antimony is an important mineral valued for its flame-retardant characteristic, and it is highly adopted due to its hardness and resistance to corrosion. Antimony has diverse industrial applications and is used in ammunition, lead batteries, and also to flame-proofing material. Antimony is also an important ingredient in semiconductors and cable sheathing. It also has an essential application in the defense sector to produce aarmor-piercing bullets, military-grade electronics, and protective coating equipment. This action makes the weaponry indispensable to national security.
