Medicare is Actively Certifying Ambulatory Surgery Centers During the Last Decade in The United States

November, 2024

Ambulatory Surgery Centers IT Services Market

Number of Medicare-Certified ASCs New Centers During the Year

Ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) provide outpatient surgical procedures for patients not requiring an overnight stay. Approximately 6,100 ASCs treated over 3.3 million in 2022. Various factors contribute to the growth of these sectors, such as changes in clinical practice and healthcare technology that have expanded the provision of surgical procedures in ambulatory settings. For patients, ASCs offer more convenient locations, shorter waiting times, lower cost sharing, and easier scheduling compared to hospital outpatient departments. For physicians, ASCs facilitate specialized staff and more control over their work environment.

As the graph represents, the number of new ambulatory surgical centers was the highest in 2021. The rise is noticed due to the shift in higher acuity procedures from the inpatient setting to the outpatient setting, increase in Medicare reimbursement rates, continued consolidation within the ASC sector, and increase in hospital activities, aiming to grow their ambulatory footprint.

The most common ambulatory surgical procedures are cataract surgery, gallbladder removal, tonsillectomy, endoscopy, and orthopedic procedures. The ambulatory surgical centers market has experienced significant growth in recent years due to technological innovation and regulation changes.

  •  In October 2024, Newsweek, the American weekly news magazine, declared America’s best ambulatory surgery centers in 2025. These 650 ASCs have been evaluated based on quality care, patient experience, performance data, and peer recommendations.

Nothing more exciting happening here in terms of content, but just filling up the space to make it look, at least at first glance, a bit more representative of how this would look in a real-world application.
